A Brief History of 2048
Threes was released on iOS on February 6, 2014. Within a month, two clones โ 1024 for iPhone and Android โ appeared with essentially the same mechanics. In March 2014, the first browser-based 2048 was released.
In 2017, John Lees-Miller published a series of papers analysing the mathematics of 2048:
- Markov chains and 2048
- Counting states โ combinatorics
- Counting states โ enumeration
- Markov decision process and 2048
Among other things, Lees-Miller calculated a theoretical minimum average of 938.8 moves to reach 2048, with some gameplay constraints removed. At Lady Di's Mines we are very interested in understanding the gap between that theoretical bound and real achievable scores.
